Where did it come from, and whatโ€™s the story behind it?

Many people would consider Dancehall music to be one of the most popular styles of Jamaican music of all time. Dancehall music originated in the 1970s and has had a significant role in influencing various other music trends worldwide.

Originally, Dancehall music began as a minimized version of reggae, unlike the roots style, which dominated much of the 1970s music scene. However, in 1980, Dancehall underwent another revolution as the introduction of digital instrumentation became more widely used, which drastically changed the sound of Dancehall.

At the same time, digital Dancehall, or ragga, was becoming increasingly defined by its much faster rhythm. Some of the key elements of Dancehall music became the extensive use of Jamaican Patois rather than the standard Jamaican English and an intense focus on track instrumentals known as riddims.

It was during the 1980s that Dancehall achieved mainstream success in Jamaica, and by the end of the 1990s, Dancehall was becoming popular in Jamaican diaspora communities. By the 2000s, Dancehall achieved mainstream worldwide success, and by the 2010s, it played a significant role in influencing popular Western artists and producers.

You may have even seen Dancehall’s influences without realizing it as Dancehall became popular in the United States, Australia, Canada, and even parts of Europe. One artist that highlighted the popularity and versatility of Dancehall was Sean Paul with his hit single โ€˜Get Busyโ€™ in 2003, which made it to the top of the US Billboard Hot 100.

You may have already seen or even made some of the dance moves which were inspired by Dancehall music, including dance moves such as: Like Glue, Bogle, Wine & Dip, Whine Up, Boosie Bounce, Shovel It, Pon Di River, and many more. In addition, dancehall music has inspired many traditional dance moves to become more energetic and exciting, invigorating crowds with its energy. Please be sure to like, subscribe, and share.
